What does a sexologist do?

A sexologist is a person educated in psychology and sexology who supports individuals experiencing difficulties in the sexual sphere. Such specialists help others understand their intimate relationships and introduce relevant changes, conduct therapy for sexual disorders, help in the area of increasing satisfaction and joy in sexual and intimate life. Sexologists may also provide counselling on topics such as anatomy, intimate hygiene, contraception, and sexually transmitted diseases. Apart from this, through conversation, they can also help you solve problems with accepting your sexual orientation, understanding your gender identity, etc., and support you if you are experiencing stress or discrimination.

What does the visit look like?

The visit is based on a conversation conducted in such a way that the sexologist can get to know you better and understand your difficulties. You may also receive recommendations for exercises to do between sessions. A sexologist may introduce you to the topics from the areas of sex education and anti-discrimination education.

What does a sex educator do? Sex educators provide education on sexuality and sexual health, offering reliable information and support. They conduct workshops and classes in various settings, such as schools, sociotherapy centers, foundations, community centers, and other institutions. Topics they cover include contraception, reproductive health, consent, safe sex, sexual diversity, gender identity, and pleasure. Additionally, sex educators offer both individual and group counseling, create educational materials, participate in debates and conferences, and monitor changes in law and policies related to sexual health. Some also engage in academic research and develop new educational methods. What does the visit look like? A consultation with a sex educator is adjusted to the individual needs of each client but usually includes the following elements:
  1. Initial conversation – establishing a safe atmosphere, setting boundaries, and ensuring confidentiality.
  2. Determining needs and expectations – identifying and defining issues that may affect sexual health, gender identity, or communication in relationships.
  3. Education and information – providing answers to questions as well as reliable information about the body, sexual practices, contraception, and social and legal norms.
  4. Support and counselling – providing assistance in the area of making healthy sexual decisions and establishing personal goals.
  5. Further steps – if necessary, suggesting further appointments or referral to specialists.
  6. Summary – concluding the meeting and making sure that all the topics have been covered.
